This gigantic mausoleum – constructed of white marble – was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 on behalf of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal.   It is the crowning achievement of Islamic art in India and is universally regarded as one of the masterpieces on the World Heritage List.   The mausoleum is built on the right bank of the Yamuna River and is set in a magnificent Mughal garden covering almost 17 hectares.   The Taj Mahal is considered the greatest architectural work in Indo-Islamic culture.   The relief work in the marble and the inlaid precious and semi-precious stones make it an extraordinary monument.
