They therefore smell wonderfully of nature and they also feel like it. The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced into Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen kills all aquatic life, which is why the plants have to be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stalks are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is an abundant, sustainable raw material for many wicker products here at Soeji! -------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Place of production: This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local producers, we value fair payment and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. Harmful chemicals are completely avoided during production. Since all work steps are done by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
