Hazelnuts are the seeds of the Corylus avellana plant, native to Asia Minor and widespread in various parts of the world including Italy.   They can be eaten raw, toasted or ground into flour or paste.   They are mainly used as a source of proteins, minerals, vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids, in particular alpha-linolenic acid.   Origin Sicily, Nebrodi.
