In addition to its environmental friendliness, cork is characterized by good material properties (water-repellent, elastic and comfortable to wear). They prevent desertification by absorbing rainwater and are home to various endangered animal species on the Iberian Peninsula. During the "cork harvest" the regrowing bark of the cork tree is peeled off by smallholders. The tree lives on, a new bark grows back and can be harvested again after a few years. The sale of the cork increases the economic importance of the forests and their preservation can be secured.
