SAWLA: Unique Bolga Shopping Baskets

Hand woven market baskets produced in the traditional Ghanaian bolga basket style. With tribal patterns and bold colours, these fair trade baskets are perfect for market trips or picnics, but can also be put to use all over the home. Every market basket in this collection is totally unique – made once and sold once. Each one of these unique shopping baskets take up to three days to weave by hand, using veta vera grass which produces baskets of excellent structural balance and durability. The grass is hand-rolled before being woven by a skilled member of our partner weaving cooperative in Northern Ghana. Most of the artisans who make these bolga baskets are farmers first and foremost, but drought makes it increasingly difficult to live off the land. Basket weaving empowers these people with the opportunity to earn a flexible second income.
