Our name “Soeji” (pronounced Sudschi) comes from Javanese and means something like “pure” or “unadulterated” – exactly what characterizes our products. We deliver fair trade home accessories directly to your home, which impress with their unique synthesis of traditional Indonesian manufacturing methods and modern design. With Soeji we want to make it easy for you to bring a piece of tropical lifestyle into your home.

We are Claudia and Tim. An Indonesian-German duo with a professional background in interior design and retail. When we first started planning to start our own small business, we were in our early twenties and still in the middle of our studies. The story behind the Soeji brand began when we happened upon several small wickerwork workshops during a stay in Claudia's home country of Indonesia in the summer of 2019.

We quickly recognized the potential of these timeless products, whose detailed workmanship impressed us immensely, and also the need to preserve traditional manufacturing methods in the long term by increasing orders. We then started talking to the owners of these family businesses and it became clear that they were also interested in working with us to produce creations based on our own designs. So we put together a selected product range within a year and finally opened our online shop in June 2020.

In our daily work, the focus is on close creative collaboration with the workshops in Indonesia, which produce our home and fashion accessories with a lot of experience and passion. Together we interpret traditional forms of handicrafts and integrate them into modern, fresh designs. Through this well-thought-out development process, we ensure that additions to our range correspond to the latest interior design trends and the highest quality standards. We attach great importance to ensuring that our products stand out from other home accessories through their combination of unusual patterns, shapes and manufacturing methods, thus creating a special, recognizable Soeji style.

By the way, with every purchase of our handmade products you are supporting the livelihood of the rural population of Indonesia in a socially and ecologically sustainable way: Our choice of materials is based primarily on locally sourced, natural plant fibers that would otherwise often end up in the trash as waste products or weeds, and the well-paid, dignified jobs that our production partners create primarily benefit older people who can no longer work in agriculture.

Our in-depth knowledge of traditional craftsmanship and current interior design trends, as well as our commitment to sustainable materials and fair trade, ensure that each of our products is not only high-quality and decorative, but also tells its own unique story and is ethically produced. In the long term, we ensure this through close cooperation with our production partners, which is characterized by regular on-site visits and short communication channels without middlemen.
